#SaturdayScoop: Richard P. Ernst Believe it or not, warmer temperatures will be here soon. For many of us being outdoors in the sunshine brings back memories of summer camp. One popular camp among Northern Kentucky adolescents is the YMCA Camp Ernst in Burlington, KY. With ziplining, horseback riding and other fun activities, Camp Ernst is a place where kids make memories to last a lifetime, but do you know about the man behind its name? Richard Pretlow Ernst was born in Covington, KY on February 28, 1858. One of nine children, he attended Covington public schools and graduated from Chickering's Academy in ...

When Kentucky suspended the public kindergarten system in 1959, Betty White bridged the educational gap, teaching 450 children in her Fort Wright home over a span of 19 years. Betty White’s contribution to Northern Kentucky’s children is commemorated in a new exhibit, "Mrs. White’s Kindergarten," opening Sunday, April 22, from 2-4 p.m. Past students have a chance to reminisce and today’s generation of preschoolers can catch a glimpse of what their grandparents‘ classrooms were like, complete with blackboards, crayons and cursive writing. Former pupil Gabrielle Summe, now Kenton County clerk, and members of the White family will speak and invite others ...

#SaturdayScoop: John A. Roebling: Bridge-Building Beginnings A major Cincinnati landmark has closed temporarily leaving some drivers looking for an alternate route across the Ohio River. The 151-year-old John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge was damaged last week when a car crashed into it. Although it is a symbol of great engineering, many people know little of the genius behind it. Johann August Roebling, born June 12, 1806 in Thuringia, Germany, was the youngest son of a tobacco manufacturer. At age 20, Roebling received a degree in civil engineering from the Royal Polytechnical Institute in Berlin. He began working in road construction, which ...
